Picking

Picking coffee is a lot of work.

Harvesting season on Songwa Estates starts at the end of April and lasts until the beginning of September.
Picking starts early as 7am and ends around 3pm when the cherries are either taken to the washing station or to a tractor with a trailer .

Payment is always made at the end of the workday. The pickers are paid by bucket and they are paid with tickets. These tickets are called "noma". In the village they are accepted as currency. At the end oft the week they can be changed to money at the farm office.
